Report: "Provo River Dry Fly Magic"
December 15, 2009
Winter is back, so are the bald eagles and the midge hatches we've all been waiting for. Conditions have certainly changed. With temps as low as they have been lately the blue wing presence, along with angling pressure on the river is a memory. The fish have already moved on to the hatching midge, indifferent to our reluctance to adapt to the cold. Who knows what the fish actually care about, but they do seem to be enjoying themselves with the absence of anglers on the river and plenty of midge to feed on. Could be they look forward to the winter midge as much as I do. Long leaders, tiny bugs, soft presentations, nobody around, and hook sets on nothing more than a funny feeling really get me fired up. I never look at winter in the Heber valley as something I have to endure until it's over. I know the midgers will be rising, gulping carefully every day no matter what the weather report looks like.
